October 2015 Newsletter

CST News

Where has the month gone? Seems only a few days ago that I was writing the September newsletter.

Since we last chatted, Gregg has left us and is working in Dunedin for us at ProSouth. We have had a huge help from Julian Davison who helped us out while we went through the replacement process. Julian finishes up at the end of the month as he starts his new job also in Dunedin. We have made an appointment to the technician position here and the new appointee will start before the end of the month.

The appointment was an interesting process – over 70 applicants from all over the world – Philippines, India, Nepal, Czechoslovakia and of course a few from NZ. I am sure some of them did not have a clue where Balclutha is.

Christmas is not far away now and Sue and I are looking at what we will do for the break. This year is “our year” for the family so will no doubt have Christmas here or hereabouts. That time of the year is difficult too – the garden and glasshouse always need a bit of care and attention and I hate asking the neighbours.

Business seems to have shown an upturn lately with more repairs coming in and general sales showing a bit of an upturn as well. We can always do with another sale or another repair, so do not be afraid to call in for a chat.

What A Novel Idea

Let the others sell drones – everyone has them!!

What about a robot for fun or for Christmas? What an amazing idea. Those of us who are old enough to remember Meccano will remember the sturdy, reliable construction sets and I presume these are the same high quality – just 21st century. This is probably a toy for dad as well as Junior!!

There are two models available:

The 61 cm tall G15 personal robot – 627 parts, 4 servos and 4 C Cell batteries at $299.99 inc GST. More detailed info here.

And for those for whom size does matter, the 122 cm G15KS model – 1188 parts, 8 servos with battery and charger included. Once again, more detailed info here.

Printers

I was interested to read our latest Consumer magazine at home recently. A test had been done on printers and the top inkjet printer in their test was the Canon MG5560. This is the model we have been recommending and selling for a long period. Consumer’s comment – “This multifunction inkjet is a good performer that connects via WiFi. It has very good energy use and a good sized 2.5” screen”.

The MG5560 has the advantage of using 5 cartridges for increased economy – you only send the cartridges for recycling when the colour is empty rather than when one of the three colours is empty. As well. Cartridge costs and page counts are really good: the three colours and photo black rated at 750 pages for $35.00 and the ordinary black rated at 500 pages for $40.00.

If you would like to see one of these, we always keep one on the shelf. Full details can be found here.

At least they appeal to my warped sense of humour.

Printer Problems and Some Simple Fixes

I found this article recently and thought it may help a few of our customers. It might just give you a few clues and point you in the right direction.

If you are still stuck, bring it on down and we can help. But do remember that unless it is an easily fixed issue, it may be cheaper to buy a new printer rather than fix an older one. We have just sent a printer to Auckland for repair – repair estimated at over $150.00 + GST + freight before we make anything. May be cheaper to buy new.

How Times Change

This picture shows men moving a 5 MB hard drive in 1956 – I did not even know such things existed in 1956. I am not sure where I found this picture – most likely Facebook. However it is mind-blowing how times change.  Now 5MB is throwaway stuff – one photo from a newish digital camera will be bigger than 5 MB. I can buy 6 terabyte hard drives these days – here tomorrow so not at all out of the ordinary, cost about $700, more than one million times more storage and will fit inside your pocket!

Blonde Joke

I knew a blonde that was so stupid that…….

* she called me to get my phone number.

* she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice box because it said “concentrate.”

* she put lipstick on her forehead because she wanted to make up her mind.

*she tried to put M&M’s in alphabetical order.

*she sent me a fax with a stamp on it.

*she tried to drown a fish.

*she thought a quarterback was a refund.

*she got locked in a grocery store and starved to death.

*she tripped over a cordless phone.

*she took a ruler to bed to see how long she slept.

*she asked for a price check at the Dollar Store.

*she studied for a blood test.

*she thought Meow Mix was a CD for cats.

*when she heard that 90% of all crimes occur around the home, she moved.

*when she missed the 44 bus, she took the 22 bus twice instead.

*when she took you to the airport and saw a sign that said “Airport Left” she turned around and went home

A Local Character

Something a bit different. For those who have not met Blair Somerville or the Lost Gypsy Gallery, have a look at this page. Blair lives at Papatowai and has a brain most of us would die for. Give him a pile of “junk” and he will make something that moves, makes a noise or simply looks intriguing.
